Hasani Sahlehe (born 1991, St. Thomas, US Virgin Islands) makes tactile, vividly colored paintings that explore perception, memory and the emotional resonance of color and form. He builds his works through bold harmonizing bands of color by pouring pigmented acrylic medium on top of hazy mists of airbrushed paint applied directly to raw canvas. The paintings flow with an all-at-once musicality.

Songs We Sing explores Sahlehe’s deep relationship with music. In addition to images of his paintings, drawings and prints this book presents the recent dialogues he has had with musicians and music producers. Sahlehe’s generosity as an interviewer and the conversions he initiated for this book are thought-provoking windows into his painting practice.

With an Introduction by Wallace Whitney. Playlists by Suzanne Jackson, Matt Porter. Conversations with Michelle Coltrane, George Clinton, Cole Cuchna, Kam Cole, and members of The Awesome Jam Band.
